Scope of Work: Building Energy Assessment
A building energy assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a building’s energy performance and the integrity of its envelope (the physical barrier between the interior and exterior of the building). This assessment focuses on identifying areas where energy efficiency can be enhanced, resulting in reduced energy consumption, lower operating costs, and improved occupant comfort.
What is the McColl Center?
The McColl Center for Art + Innovation is a nationally acclaimed artist residency and contemporary art space located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Housed in the former Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Uptown Charlotte, the McColl Center features nine individual artist studios, over 5,000 square feet of exhibition space, and multiple common-use spaces that include a studio for large-scale sculpture fabrication. We encourage artists to take creative risks in their processes and explore their ideas within the Charlotte context. Additionally, we welcome the visiting public to engage with contemporary art and artists through our exhibitions and public programs.

Energy Systems Evaluation: Examine HVAC systems, lighting, and other equipment for efficiency and condition, particularly in areas designated for artist residency. Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs): Identify potential upgrades for improved efficiency, such as efficient HVAC systems, lighting, or renewable energy sources tailored to enhance the building energy assessment.
Thermal Performance: Assess insulation, windows, and doors in your contemporary art space for optimal heat retention and cooling. Building Energy Assessment: Implement air leakage testing methods such as blower door tests or infrared thermography to identify air leaks. Moisture Management: Evaluate the building's ability to manage moisture effectively, preventing mold growth and structural issues within the artist residency.
Ventilation and Air Quality: Ensure adequate ventilation and maintain good indoor air quality in the contemporary art space. Thermal Comfort: Assess temperature and humidity levels during a building energy assessment to ensure occupant comfort at the artist residency.
Assessment Report: Outline findings from the building energy assessment, including current performance, identified issues, and potential improvements for the contemporary art space. Cost-Benefit Analysis: Provide a financial analysis of the recommended measures for the artist residency, detailing costs, savings, and ROI. Implementation Plan: Suggest a step-by-step plan for implementing improvements in the contemporary art space, prioritizing based on impact and cost-effectiveness.
